How a click-to-chat link works
WhatsApp publishes one official address for this: wa.me. You append the phone number in international format, and optionally a pre-filled message. There is no API to call and no approval to wait for. The link works for any number that has WhatsApp, on a personal account or a Business one.
Anatomy of the link
| Part | What it does |
|---|---|
https://wa.me/ | WhatsApp’s official short domain for click-to-chat |
905321234567 | Country code and number, digits only: no +, spaces, dashes or leading zero |
?text= | Starts the optional pre-filled message |
Hi%20there | The message, URL-encoded, so spaces become %20 automatically |
Three mistakes that break the link
Keeping the leading zero
A national number like 0532 123 45 67 becomes 905321234567: the country code replaces the zero. Leaving it in sends people to a number that does not exist.
Typing the plus sign
wa.me wants bare digits. A + in the URL is either dropped or encoded as a space, and the chat never opens.
Pasting an unencoded message
Line breaks, ampersands and question marks cut the message short when they are not encoded. This tool encodes as you type, so copy the finished link rather than assembling one by hand.
Where to put it
- Instagram and TikTok bio, where a tappable link beats a phone number nobody copies
- Your website header, as a button next to the phone number
- Email signature and invoices, so a question never becomes a lost thread
- Printed QR on the counter, the menu, the shop window or the delivery box
- Ad campaigns, so the click lands in a conversation instead of a form
The link is the easy half
A click-to-chat link creates conversations. What decides whether they turn into revenue is what happens after the first message: who answers, how fast, whether the last three messages from that customer are visible, and whether anyone remembers to follow up.
- Every incoming chat lands in a shared inbox your whole team works from, with an owner on each conversation
- Each number becomes a contact record, so the history is there the next time they write
- AI replies in your voice while you sleep and hands the conversation over when it needs a person
- Follow-ups go out on a schedule and stop the moment the customer replies
