How the engagement rate is calculated

The calculator uses the same definition as our benchmark, so your result and the band figures measure the same thing. Take the average likes and the average comments on your recent posts, add them, divide by followers and multiply by 100.

(average likes + average comments) ÷ followers × 100

The dataset’s own definition, quoted
(mean likes + mean comments) per post, divided by followers, times 100. Computed from the posts the crawl retains for each account, not from a sampled subset chosen at query time.

What this rate counts, and what it leaves out

  • Likes and comments only. Saves, shares and views are not part of it, because the benchmark does not count them.
  • Divided by followers, not by reach. Some tools divide by the accounts that saw a post instead, which gives a different number for the same post.
  • Recent posts, not a year. The benchmark averages about 12 of each account’s most recent posts, Reels, carousels and single images together.
  • Read against a band. Engagement falls as accounts grow, so a rate means little until it sits next to accounts of the same size.

Instagram engagement rate by follower band

Likes plus comments per post, divided by followers, as percentiles across 7,669 measured accounts. Your band is highlighted once you enter a follower count.

A band counts as reliable from 100 accounts, and every band here clears it. p25 means a quarter of the accounts in the band score below that figure; p90 means nine in ten do.

Where the numbers come from

Instagram engagement rate benchmarks 2026

The bands come from our open dataset of public Instagram accounts, published with its method, limits and downloads. The catalogue leans toward creators and public figures, which is one reason its medians sit above most brand-page benchmarks; the report sets the two side by side.

Frequently asked questions

Add the average likes and the average comments on your recent posts, divide the total by your follower count and multiply by 100. An account with 20,000 followers, 600 average likes and 40 average comments has a rate of 3.2%. It is the definition our benchmark uses, so the result can be read against the bands directly.
It depends on your follower count, because engagement falls as accounts grow. The median rate in our data, by follower band: Under 10K: 19.3% · 10K-100K: 6.4% · 100K-1M: 3.5% · 1M-10M: 2.0% · 10M+: 1.0%. A rate above your band’s 75th percentile puts you in the top quarter of accounts your size.
Because they measure different things. Some divide by reach instead of followers, some add saves and shares, and some average a whole year of posts. This one counts likes and comments on your recent posts and divides by followers, exactly as the benchmark does, so the comparison with the bands is like for like.
Yes. When Reels and Explore show a post to far more people than follow the account, it can collect more likes than the account has followers. In our data the 90th percentile of the under 10K band is 301.8%.
Your most recent posts, about 12 of them, whatever the format: Reels, carousels and single images all count. That matches how the benchmark was measured. Leaving out weaker posts makes your rate look better than the rates your band was measured on.
No. The calculation runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to Pinlyx or stored anywhere.
